Help!

Just to be clear, this post has nothing to do with Maddie. So if that's the only reason you check this blog, you can stop reading now! But if you really just love me and want to give me your input on a very important matter, keep going! :) As you may know, I've been getting in touch with my crafty side since Maddie was born, as you can see by the many craft blogs I follow on the right. But a lot of the projects I've come up with or seen really require a little more than a pair of scissors and a glue gun. I keep getting grand ideas only to have my creativity stunted by a serious lack of "toys." This was evident when I blogged about the totally awesome mobile I made, complete with 96 hand-cut circles (go me). I was so excited about it I posted it on a couple other craft blogs expecting heaps of praise only to have someone inform me that it would've been much easier with a paper punch. Yeah, duh.

So anyway, I've decided to ask for a personal cutter for Christmas. You know, those cool machines that cut out anything you want in a breeze. Just think of the endless possibilities!! Scrapbooks, vinyl wall sayings, cute personalized cards, blah, blah, blah. But I need help figuring out which one to get - a Silhouette or a Cricut (which I somehow always end up calling a cricket). So here's where you guys come in. Leave me a comment below with your thoughts - any experiences you've had with these machines, anything you've heard from a friend of a friend, etc. Help me realize my dream!!! Thanks :)

I like the Silhouette because I'm pretty handy with computer design programs (like Adobe Illustrator) so I like the idea of being able to make whatever I want without having to buy a bunch of cartridges at $50 a pop.

The Cricut is cheaper and is pretty much the standard from what I've seen - everyone has one or has used one. But those cartridges are mighty pricey ....

  1. I've had my cricut for 2 years now & I LOVE it! The cartridges can be pricey, but there's this lovely program called Sure-cuts-a-lot that let's you hook the cricut up to your computer and cut whatever you want. I think both machines are pretty similar, and I don't think you can go wrong with either one. How's that for helpful?!
PS--do you want to come to a craft night at my house this Thursday? Email me at kritty518 at yahoo dot com!

  2. Hey Jen, I don't own one of these, though I would love too. Buuuuttt, My Brother-In-Law works for Silhouette. From what I have heard, it is kind of the step up from the Cricut. (Obviously biased, he sells them :-) You can pretty much create anything on the Silhouette. If you can design it, it can cut it. If I were to get one, that is the one I would choose.

  3. So, I haven't ever used a silhouette, but I love my cricut! I got it for Christmas last year. I mostly make cards and stuff like that, but I think it's really nifty. Also, I haven't ever bought a cricut cartridge for more than $25. You can find some good deals online and at Walmart. They go on sale all the time at different places, so you just have to keep your eyes open. BUT, even that can still add up. Good luck with your decision! I agree with Kristy that you can't really go wrong either way!

  4. I was just looking at http://www.u-createcrafts.com/ and noticed they are giving away a silhouette. Also, you can get $100 off a machine if you don't win the contest and just want to buy one.
