Pumpkin Painting
We don't carve pumpkins around here - with kids as young as ours, it just ends up being too much work for Jordan and I! So we paint pumpkins instead. The girls love it and everyone gets to participate. We did three this year, one for each girl. Reagan got a little bit of help from Daddy with hers :) Madison did a cute face, as expected, and McKinley started off with a cute face and then decided to just dip her hands into the paint and smear it all over the pumpkin. Also as expected :)

Ward Party
Our ward trunk or treat was the week before Halloween so we had to have costumes ready by then. I was pretty happy with how ours turned out this year! Madison decided a few weeks before that she wanted to be Princess Peach (we use the Wii as a reward for good behavior around here so getting to play Mario is pretty special!). Since I always like to do themed family costumes (makes it easier to come up with ideas), we went with a Mario theme. McKinley was Toad (a girl toad, mind you. Thus the purple vest), Reagan was Yoshi (there was some talk about making her Bowser but it was decided that no one should be a bad guy) and Jordan and I were Luigi and Mario. People kept asking McKinley what she was going to be, and she was so excited to tell them she was going to be Toad. But everyone was always confused by that answer and would just assume she was going to be a frog. So she was especially excited to show off her costume, and it was funny to see it finally make sense to people! I made McKinley's toad hat and vest as well as the hats and mustaches for Jordan and I. Madison already had the pink princess dress so I just got her a pink foam crown that she decorated. And I found a little green frog costume on a garage sale site that had a cute hat that I thought worked perfectly for Reagan's Yoshi look. Anyway, it was fun and I think it turned out cute! We were the only family at the party that had every member dressed up :)
Ta da!
The girls got their faces painted
The girls went around once to get candy but then wanted to hang out with us and pass it out. Well, Madison wanted to pass it out; McKinley just wanted to eat hers!
Somehow Reagan got ahold of a dum dum, and of course she loved it!!! She ate the entire thing, and was a sticky mess by the time she was through! It kept her happy the whole night!
Book Parade
Madison's school had a book parade for Halloween. This was kind of a fun idea, and I guess a good way to disguise the festivities as something educational. Everyone got to dress up in costume and parade around the school but you had to bring a book that went with your costume. This posed a problem for us as I couldn't find any books about Mario or Princess Peach, and there was no way I was going to come up with another costume. So we got permission for Madison to write her own book. She did a fantastic job!! She wrote and illustrated the entire thing entirely on her own. It was called "The Big Princess Peach Save" and was a complete 10-page story about how Bowser captures Princess Peach and Mario, Luigi and Toad have to go save her. That girl is so smart and creative!!
The tall witch in the middle is Madison's teacher Mrs. Barnes
There's Madison waving to the crowd!
After the parade, we went back to Madison's classroom and sang some Halloween songs. McKinley (who insisted on wearing her Toad costume) wanted so badly to join in and Madison was a great big sister and included her in everything!
Decorations
We did a lot of our typical Halloween projects to put up around the house, which is always fun. Maybe someday we'll buy decorations, but for now I love our homemade stuff and the girls love doing it!
We had a ton of comments about our monster door. I think it's my favorite thing that we do every year
Spider webs
Cotton ball ghosts
Paper pumpkins (McKinley wanted hers to be purple of course)
Madison came up with this monster all on her own. I love it!
We had lots of foam ghosts and pumpkins hanging all over the house
Handprint bats
A witch Madison drew at school
The Big Day
We started the day with pumpkin pancakes that I let the girls decorate with chocolate chips and whipped cream
This girl LOVED the pancakes!
Lunch was Jack O Lantern quesadillas and ghost bananas
And finally, dinner was ghost pizza and monster pudding
Trick or treating! Our neighborhood was SOOOOO awesome!!! We just walked around the streets by our house for about an hour and a half and had a great time!!!
It's hard to see but this is a dragon chasing Olaf in someone's front yard. There were so many houses completely decked out. I've never seen things so done up for Halloween! I can't wait to see what Christmas looks like around here!!
This pumpkin was so cool - they had a projector shining on it that made it look and sound like it was saying all the stuff that the narrator says at the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland. I recognized the words immediately and just thought it was so cool! I want one!!!
Three tired girls
Not a bad haul :)
