Dirk 1 Year

My sweet boy is 1! This last year has been so incredibly hard as I've juggled four young children and a very demanding church calling, but my Dirky boy has been such an amazing blessing ... he is the happiest, easiest, sweetest kid ever and is just a joy and light to all of us! I'm so blessed to be his Mom! He's the perfect caboose to our family. I'm not normally very sentimental, but I kinda wish this one would just stay little forever!! But of course, just to prove it isn't going to happen, he celebrated his birthday by taking his first step :) Here's to lots more adventures and birthday celebrations with our sweet boy!

- Size: 19 pounds (15%), 29.75 inches (47%), 9-12 month clothes, size 2 shoes, size 3 diapers. We're not kidding when we call him our little man :)
- Sleep: I finally made him sleep through the night the last week of December, which only took a couple nights of light crying. So now he goes from about 7:30 pm to 7 am or a little before with two daytime naps, usually around 10 and 4 (which would be earlier but we're gone from 3-4 picking up the girls from school). His morning nap usually lasts at least an hour and a half and usually more than 2 hours, although he likes to play in his bed for a while after waking up so I don't know how long he actually sleeps. Since his afternoon nap is so late, I only let him sleep until about 5 or 5:30.
- Eating: He's a good eater in general and loves Veggie Straws, oatmeal and apples in particular. He's funny about food though - he always immediately spits out the first bite of everything and then proceeds to eat it just fine! He also blows raspberries at you to tell you he's done. Silly boy. We were in the process of weaning before his 1 year check-up but the doc suggested I keep nursing for a while due to his lower weight and the severity of flu season so we're still doing twice a day.
- His official nickname is actually Dirky or Dirky Boy
- This kid smiles at EVERYTHING! He is so happy and just lights up the room with his smile! All you have to do is look at him or say his name and he grins from ear to ear!
- He's also a huge flirt and loves to tease people :) He smiles to get your attention and then buries his head in my shoulder for a few seconds and then looks back to make sure you're still watching him
- He is VERY attached to his blue blankie that my Grandma made him. He has it with him almost everywhere. He won't get out of bed without it! Thankfully she made three but we already lost one on a walk so I think I better have her make more
- He exclusively crawls on his hands and knees now and did take his first step on his birthday. But anytime we try to work on standing or stepping, he thinks it's a game and just laughs and falls! He does walk around holding on to our hands just fine. He cruises along furniture and pulls himself up on everything. He has also already mastered going up the stairs! He loves to use his dump truck as a walker and pushes it all over the house.
- He doesn't have a whole lot of patience for books; he just wants to turn all the pages. But he LOVES balls!! He chases them all over the house. He also loves to pull all the movies off the shelves and play in the kitchen cupboards. He entertains himself pretty well in the toy corner, but his favorite place to play is in the pantry, pulling all the food off the shelves
- He likes baths and water in general. I took him swimming for the first time in a couple months the week before his birthday and he was in heaven!
- He loves me but is becoming a Daddy's boy. Every time he sees Jordan, especially if Jordan's been gone for a while like at work, he just wants Dad. He even pushes away from me to get to Jordan! Dad always has to take him upstairs with him when he changes after work because Dirk is so insistent on seeing Dad
- He also LOVES his sisters. He and Reagan are obviously the closest since she's home all day, and he thinks Reagan is hilarious! But he plays well with Madison and McKinley too. All the girls think Dirk is pretty much the greatest thing ever! He is well loved in our family
- He loves to play with his toes and especially loves when I play pat-a-cake with his feet or pretend they're stinky. He laughs and laughs and laughs! He's ticklish pretty much everywhere
- He gives kisses and high fives
- He loves being outside and is totally content in the stroller on walks. I hate letting him crawl around at the park and get all nasty since he still puts stuff in his mouth so for that reason, I hope he walks soon. He REALLY loves the little car we got him for his birthday!
- He has a funny habit of demanding my car keys every time we go to the car. When we get out, as soon as I open his door, he sticks his hand out and yells at me until I hand him my keys!

I had to do a couple takes for his pictures because every time he touches his dump truck nowadays he's off to the races so it's hard to get pictures! You can also clearly see his love of balls in these pictures :)

He likes to play catch with himself :)

Is that not the cutest face you've ever seen?!
