My Grandma Bobbie passed away this week after battling cancer and emphysema. I wasn't particularly close to her as there's a lot of family drama on that side, but she was always very kind and loving to me! She always remembered my birthdays and sent gifts when each of my kids were born. She loved seeing us when we visited! She had a really funny laugh that I'll always remember! She was really into Indy car racing and I have fond memories of visiting her apartment as a kid and playing with a bunch of wind-up race cars that she had. They would flip over when they hit a wall and my brother and I thought that was SO cool! I also remember thinking it was so weird that she kept a big stack of papers in her oven. She NEVER cooked with the oven or the stove, preferring to eat out or use the microwave, so she kept all her bills and important papers in the oven! I also remember that whenever we saw her as kids, she always had a bunch of little knick knacks for us from her racing trips - keychains, magnets, pens, stickers, note pads, etc. I'm sure this drove my parents crazy (now that I understand just how much junk there is around my house!) but I loved that she was always thinking of us on our trips. She continued this with my kids; they still have some of the things she gave them!
Knowing that she wasn't going to be around very much longer, my Dad planned a family dinner for her 80th birthday and asked us to come to California for it and surprise her. It was a quick trip, but I'm so glad we went as it did end up being the last time we saw her. She wasn't a perfect woman, mother or grandmother, but I know she loved me and I miss her!!
